The Hytale team has finally shared a huge update, and it is one that many of us have been waiting on for years. In their latest blog post, they confirmed that Hytale enters early access on January 13, 2026, with pre purchase opening on December 13, 2025.

In this article, I want to walk through the key points to and share what it all might mean for players, modders, and server owners.

The founders bought Hytale back

One of the biggest surprises in the recent announcement is that the original founders have taken back control of Hytale after its cancellation.

They explain:

“Two weeks ago, we, the original founders, repurchased Hytale, months after it was cancelled. We revived the project, and we are returning to a four-year-old legacy build that had been abandoned. We are personally committing funding for many years to come.”

To me, that is a strong signal of commitment. The people who first dreamed up Hytale are now the ones funding and steering it again, and they are clearly thinking in years, not months.

Why they went back to the legacy build

The recent blog posts also talks about a major technical decision. In the past, development by Riot had moved to a newer engine that was meant to be a complete cross platform rewrite. That sounded ambitious, but it also made it harder to show real, playable progress.

Instead, the team has decided to return to the older version of the game. That came with a big engineering cost:

“We stepped away from the newer engine, which was intended to be a complete cross-platform rewrite, and we are now focused on reviving the original version. This required picking, choosing, and merging more than 300 GitHub branches into a single working branch. It was a significant engineering effort, but we’re now confident enough to launch early access.”

For players, this basically means we get a version of Hytale that is closer to what was shown years ago, even if it is rough around the edges. The tradeoff is clear, the game will have many bugs but there will be a game for people to play.

Independent again and back to the 2018 vision

Another important point is that both Hytale and Hypixel Studios are independent again. The team writes:

“Hytale and Hypixel Studios are independent again, and we are returning to the original vision from the 2018 trailer. quote

At the same time, they are very honest about the state of the game. Because they went back to an older build, some parts are not caught up to modern expectations:

“Because we went back to an older game build that was now meant for prototypes, some parts of the game will feel behind, but momentum is strong, and we’re working fast to make this into the game we all dreamed of. quote

I like that they are not trying to pretend this is a polished launch. They are clearly framing this as a starting point that will improve in public, and with the help of the community!

Modding and creative tools on day one

For many people, Hytale has always been about creativity: modding, servers, minigames, and custom content. The blog posts gives an update on that side of things:

“Modding and creative tools are in a decent state; however, they’re not where we want them long term. That being said, they’re ready for players who want to create content on day 1. This is a good moment for modders, server owners, and creators to step in early! They will play a significant role in Hytale’s future. quote

So while the tools are not at the final vision yet, they are usable from the very start of early access. If you are a modder, server owner, or content creator, this sounds like a chance to get in early, experiment, and help shape what those tools become. This is why we are building HyItems, to help enable the creative community to share and build

Rebuilding the team

The past announcements also explain how quickly the studio has been scaling back up after the cancellation:

Since the cancellation, Simon has rehired more than 40 former and new team members, bringing the total to 50. Reacquiring a game from a AAA studio and preparing an early access launch within weeks is rare, and players will be able to watch the progress as it happens.

A 50 person team is not small. Combined with the founders personally funding the project, this feels like a serious reboot of development.

The idea that “players will be able to watch the progress as it happens” ties directly into the early access approach. We are going to see the game evolve live! Simon even shared that Hytale has been tested amongst a small group of 60 people!

Clear expectations about pre purchase

One part of the post that really stood out to me is how strongly they warn players not to pre purchase if they are unsure. They write:

“This is true early access, meaning it’s still very much unfinished and broken, but you have my and the team’s commitment to make Hytale the game we’ve always wanted it to be. The game isn’t good yet; eventually, it will be. If you don’t feel comfortable pre-ordering or participating in Early Access, please don’t.”

That is about as clear as it gets. Early access is going to be buggy and incomplete. If you choose to pre purchase on December 13, 2025, it should be because you want to support the project in its unfinished state, not because you expect a polished experience on day one.

My thoughts

As someone following Hytale for a long time, this blog post feels like a reset. The original founders now own the project again, the studio is independent, and development is centered around growing with the community.

Early access on January 13, 2026 will not be the final version of Hytale. It will be messy, incomplete, and still in progress. But it will also be the first time we can finally log in, explore, build, mod, and watch the game grow in real time. (This is what a tinkerer is looking for!)

I will be keeping an eye on every update between now and early access, and I am especially interested in what modders, server owners, and creators will do with the tools that are available on day one.
